LOCAL AREA

AMBERLEY nestles at the foot of the South downs Way and between a ridge looking over the Wildbrooks and the river Arun. The Wildbrooks is designated as both a Conservation Area and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Is also a Ramsar site and haunt of Bewick & Whooper Swans in winter. Parts of the village are clustered around the walls of Amberley Castle, formerly a Palace of the Bishops of Chichester in the middle ages and now a Relais & Chateaux Country House Hotel.

Amberley has a 13th Century Church with wall paintings, a working pottery, 2 village pubs and a shop and post office, it also has a mainline station on the outskirts of the village with connection to London Victoria, London Gatwick & London Bridge.

The area is soon to receive National Park Status and there is an easy drop down from The South Downs Way into the heart of the village.

Most of the Parish can be seen from The South Downs way, National Walk Trail from Eastbourne to Winchester which runs along the top of the scarp slope, South of Amberley descanding at High Titton. Another long distance footpath, the Wey- South path enters Amberley village from Mill lane and proceeds Northwards across the Wildbrooks to the Hamlet of Greatham.
